Claims about colloidal silver products being a cure-all for everything from colds and flu to AIDS, MRSA infections, Ebola and cancer are illegal. The FDA prevents manufacturers of supplements from claiming their products can be effectively used to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Doing so would classify the dietary supplement as a drug, and drugs require prior FDA approval, often following clinical trials. Rather, manufacturers of dietary supplements are limited to what is considered a “structure-function claim,” which in the case of colloidal silver is “immune support.”
